Preferred Specimen
2.0 mL Plasma (1.0 mL minimum)
CINCINNATI: EDTA sample unspun and at room temperature or refrigerated must be tested within 24 hours.  Any samples tested after 24 hours of collection should be spun, plasma separated from cells and frozen in a plastic tube.


LIMA: EDTA samples.  Do not store at room temperature.  Keep refrigerated.   Any samples tested after 24 hours of collection should be spun, plasma separated from cells and frozen in a plastic tube.

 


Instructions
Plastic blood collection tubes are recommended for sample collection, as BNP is unstable in glass containers.  Use of glass tubes and transfer pipettes affects accurate quantitation of BNP.

Specimen Stability
After centrifugation, store separated plasma samples at 2o to 8oC until testing.  samples may undergo up to 4 freeze/thaw cycles without degradation.  Samples are stable up to 9 months when stored frozen at or below -20oC.
