Instructions


The specimen of choice should be taken from at least 1 cm inside the nares.  Lesions in the nose require culture from the advancing margin of the lesion.

Method



1.Carefully insert the swab at least 1 cm into the nares.



2.Firmly sample the membrane by rotating the swab and leaving it in place for 10-15 sec.



3.Withdraw the swab and insert it into the transport container.



4.Label the specimen with the patient demographics and specimen source.

Methodology: Real time PCR for the presence of methacillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This test is intended to be used as a measure of colonization with MRSA and does NOT indicate infection.  Only nasal sources should be tested
