Preferred Specimen
5 - 10 mL. Fresh Random Stool


Instructions
Consider Giardia and/or Cryptosporidium Screen(s) first. If symptoms persist or travel history suggests parasite other than Giardia, then proceed with O&P. Recommended screening procedure is 3 random specimens, one each day or one every other day and no more than two specimens per hospital admission. Possible exceptions include severely immunocompromised patients, close contacts of infected patients or patients with recent travel history. Notify Laboratory. Wait at least one week after barium procedures or laxative before collecting specimen. Specimens containing urine, water, castor oil, Barium, Bismuth or Metamucil will be rejected. Liver aspirations should be obtained from the edge of the abscess, not the center. Test includes: Direct Wet Mount, Concentration and Permanent Stained Smear.

Ambient if ParaPak preservative is used.  Fresh specimens require immediate transport or refrigeration.
