Instructions
Includes anaerobic culture, aerobic culture, Gram Stain, identification and aerobic susceptibility (if indicated). Beta-lactamase is performed on anaerobes. Anaerobic susceptibilities are not routinely performed, but available upon request. Aseptically cleanse culture site prior to aspiration of fluid to avoid contamination from skin and mucous membranes. Specimens of sterile body fluids may be submitted in FAN Blood Culture Bottles, however, an additional tube must be submitted if Gram Stain or additional testing is preferred. DO NOT Submit in a lavender EDTA tube--use sodium heparin to prevent clot formation. Plates held for 7 days following report to allow further testing upon request.
