Acid Fast Culture and Smear (Fluid, Tissue, Body Fluid, Bone Marrow, Bronchial Washings, Sputum, Urine)

Preferred Specimen
5-10 mL of Fluid in a sterile leak proof container or Tissue, Fresh in a sterile leak proof container or 0.5 - 2.0 mL Bone Marrow in a sterile Heparinized Green Top Tube. Call Microbiology for special isolator tube. Skin or Lesion Scrapings Sterile Tube containing 0.5 mL. sterile saline. Do not send swabs.

Collect three specimens at 8-24 hour intervals from patients with clincial and radiological evidence of tuberculosis.

Include at least 1 first morning specimen.

Instructions
Includes acid fast smear, concentrated specimen & acid fast culture. If AFB is recovered, identification will be performed. Susceptibilities are performed on first time isolates of M. tuberculosis. Additional charges will be added if ID & susceptibility are performed. Negative cultures are reported in 8 weeks. The specimen will be divided in the laboratory for multiple orders if the specimen is of adequate volume for all tests.
