Test Code
CXURN

Preferred Specimen
2-10 mL urine (1.0 minimum)

Instructions
Clean catch specimen is preferred. Specimen can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.

Clean Catch

First morning specimen is preferred.  Collect the specimen AFTER the first part of the urine has been voided. Contaminants are discarded in the first portion of the stream.  This portion reflects what is in the bladder.

Collection Materials

Sterile screw cap container
Antibacterial soap
Gauze sponges
Rinse water

Method
Give the patient good oral instructions as follows: “We would like a good urine specimen in order to diagnose you infection. It is important that you understand these instructions so you will not contaminate your specimen with other germs”.

Instructions for females
  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Sit comfortably on the toilet and swing one knee to the side as far as you can.
  3. Spread yourself with one hand and hold yourself spread while you clean yourself and collect the specimen.
  4. Be sure to wash and rinse well before you collect the specimen. Using soap and water and the wipes we’ve given you, wipe your genital area as carefully as you can from front to back, between the folds of skin.
  5. Rinse. After washing with each soap pad, rinse with water moistened gauze with the same front to back motion. Use each pad only once and then throw them away.
  6. Remove the cap off the urine cup. Hold the urine cup with your fingers on the outside. Don’t touch the rim. First, pass a small amount of urine into the toilet and then pass enough urine into the cup to fill it half full.
  7. Put the lid securely on the urine cup.
  8. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  9. Check the lid of the cup and be sure the cap is securely threaded. Leaky specimens will be rejected.
  10. Label the specimen with the patient demographics and specimen source (Clean catch urine)
  11. Refrigerate the specimen if it cannot be delivered to Microbiology within 30 minutes.
