CULTURE, ANAEROBIC BACTERIA, WOUND/TISSUE/FLUID
MessageAnaerobic culture samples must be collected to avoid contamination with normal flora from skin and mucous membranes. Specimens from sites that have anaerobic bacteria as normal flora will not be cultured anaerobically. The following are examples of unacceptable anaerobic specimens: sputum/upper respiratory, vaginal, skin and superficial wounds, decubitus ulcer surface. Collect one of the following: Tissue/Biopsy: Submit specimen with a small amount (<1ml) sterile non- bacteriostatic saline to keep specimen moist. Do not submit in excess saline or other fluids. Actual tissues/fluids are preferred over swab specimens. If a swab must be used, eSwab is recommended. Aspirate/Drainage/Cyst/Fluid: Aspirate material from the wall of the wound. Avoid surface material, sample the deepest portion of the infected site. Drainage should never be collected from the bag. Drainage should be collected via a direct aspiration of fluid from the area being drained. Submit in a capped syringe (express air from syringe, remove needle, and recap with syringe cap) or sterile screw cap container . Closed Abscess: Decontaminate the skin and aspirate from the deepest portion of the infected site. Submit in sterile screw cap container or capped syringe.
