Instructions
Submit only 1 of the following specimensSpecimen Type: Aspirations (Body cavity fluids)container : Sterile container Acceptable: 1. PreserveCyt solution in prefilled vial2. Specimen with equal volume 50%, 70%, 80%, or 95% ethanol3. Specimens fixed in carbowax, CytoSpin collection fluid, or CytoRich redSpecimen Volume: 50-100 mL Collection Instructions: 1. Collect body fluid by aspirating the body cavity through the body wall or by collecting from a chest tube. 2. Place 100 mL (minimum 50 mL) in clea, dry container . 3. Glass container s should be avoided.4. Refrigerate and submit immediately to the laboratory.Specimen Type: Brushings (Bronchial, gastric, esophageal, common bile duct, ureter, etc.)container : Cytology fixativeAcceptable: 1. PreserveCyt solution in prefilled vial2. Specimen with equal volume 50%, 70%, 80%, or 95% ethanol3. Specimens fixed in carbowax, CytoSpin collection fluid, or CytoRich redSpecimen Volume: Entire collectionCollection Instructions: 1. Brush suspected lesion through direct sampling of visualized lesions. 2. Immediate fixation: snip the brush, about an inch above the brush, and place immediately in cytology preservative or saline. 3. Direct smears may be made at this time with immediate fixation either in 95% alcohol or fixation. 4. When cultures are indicated, send separate specimen without preservative directly to microbiology.Specimen Type: Spinal fluid (CSF)container : Sterile container Acceptable: 1. PreserveCyt solution in prefilled vial2. Specimen with equal volume 50%, 70%, 80%, or 95% ethanol3. Specimens fixed in carbowax, CytoSpin collection fluid, or CytoRich redSpecimen Volume: 5 mL (0.5 mL minimum)Collection Instructions: 1. Collect specimen using sterile technique. 2. Place 3-5 mL (035 minimum) of specimen ina clean, sterile container . 3. Specimen should be submitted to the laboratory within 30-60 minutes of collection. Cellular degredation occurs quickly. 4. If delivery will be delayed, add equal amount of cytology preservative to the fluid immediately. Refrigerate and deliver to the laboratory ASAP. 5. The lab will not accept cases suspected or positive for CJD. 1Specimen Type: Direct scrapings or smears (Tzanck smear, ORal, anal, nipple discharge, etc.)container : Cytology preservative or slideAcceptable: 1. PreserveCyt solution in prefilled vial2. Specimen with equal volume 50%, 70%, 80%, or 95% ethanol3. Specimens fixed in carbowax, CytoSpin collection fluid, or CytoRich redSpecimen Volume: Entire CollectionCollection Instructions: 1. Collect epithelial cells using a spatula by scraping the base of the vesicle(s) and swirling the spatula directly into cytology preservative or by direct smear by placing the slide to the expressed fluid. 2. Smear material evently onto the slide. Using the pull apart method, sperad the sample. 3. Immediately spray slide with cytology fixative. Do not let slide air dry. 4. Alternatively the expressed fluid and slice and be placed directly into a container with cytology preservative.Specimen Type: Anal Papcontainer : ThinPrep vialAcceptable: 1. PreserveCyt2. Dacron swab3. CytobrushSpecimen Volume: Entire collectionCollection Instructions: 1. Collected adequate sample using a moistened Dacron swab or cytobrush.2. Rinse swab/brush as quickly as possible in the PreserveCyt solution by rotating the device in the solution 10 times while pushing against the PreservCyt ThinPrep vial wall. Swirl the device vigorously to further release material. Discard the device. 3. Tighten the cap so that the torque line on the cap passes the torque line on the ThinPrep vial.4. Anal pap may also be obtained by inserting a cytobrush 1.5 cm into the anal cavity and submitted in a ThinPrep vial or other cytology preservative.
