CULTURE AND GRAM STAIN, AEROBIC BACTERIA, WOUND/TISSUE/FLUID
MessagePlease order specific aerobic culture tests for Respiratory, Urine, Stool, Genital, and Catheter Tip sources. These sources are not included in this test. Collect one of the followings: Tissue/Biopsy: Submit specimen with a small amount (<1ml) sterile non- bacteriostatic saline to keep specimen moist. Do not submit in excess saline or other fluids. Aspirate/Drainage/Cyst/Fluid: Aspirate material from the wall of the wound. Avoid surface material, sample the deepest portion of the infected site. Submit in sterile screw cap container or capped syringe. Closed Abscess: Decontaminate the skin and aspirate from the deepest portion of the infected site. Submit in sterile screw cap container or capped syringe. Open Abscess or Lesion: Decontaminate the skin and collect specimen from the advancing margin or base of wound. Submit in sterile container or eSwab. Drainage: Drainage should never be collected from the bag. Drainage should be collected via a direct aspiration of fluid from the area being drained or by aspiration of fresh fluid in the drainage tube after decontamination of the surface of the device. Actual tissues/fluids are preferred over swab specimens. If a swab must be used, eSwab is recommended (an additional swab is needed if testing is requested for Fungal/AFB Cultures)
