GLUCOSE CHALLENGE

Patient Preparation: The patient is nonfasting. But should not have had anything to eat at least 1 hour prior to having the test performed. 1. Provide the patient a 50-gram glucose load. It must be consumed in 5 minutes. If the patient vomits the test must be canceled, andrescheduled. 2. The patient can't eat, drink, smoke, or exercise while they are waiting the 1 hour after drinking the glucose load. Patient can only drink water. Instruct the patient that they will be drawn in one hour and must stay in the area. 3. One hour after ingestion of glucose, collect a blood specimen and process it according to the specimen type. Information: This test is performed as the initial screening in a two-step approach to gestational diabetes mellitus at 24-28 weeks gestation, a serum or plasmaglucose is measured 1 hour after a 50-g oral glucose load.-The patient is nonfasting. No fasting sample needs to be drawn.- The patient should not have had anything to eat 1 hour prior to having the test performed.- The patient is given a 50-gram glucose load.
