Patient Preparation: It is preferable for the patient to be off medications for a minimum of 18-24 hours prior to collection. However, common antihypertensives (diuretics, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, alpha and beta blockers) may cause minimal or no interference. Patient should avoid tobacco, tea, coffee, and strenuous exercise for 8-12 hours prior to collection. Specimen Requirement: Preferred: Preserved 24-hour urine (6N HCl)Acceptable: Unpreserved urine (pH < or = 6)Immediate Specimen Processing: Patient 24-Hour Urine Collection Instructions1. Add 6N HCl to container prior to collection (if using)2. Keep specimen Refrigerated during and after collection. IL 24-Hour Pre-Analytical Processing Job Aid 1. Transfer a well-mixed urine specimen to a BD Clear No Additive container or a screw-cap transport vial before transporting to the lab. Do not send the 24 hour collection kit/jug to the lab. Processing Instructions: IL 24-Hour Pre-Analytical Processing Job Aid 1. Measure the total volume of the specimen. 2. Mix the specimen well.3. Document the total volume and other information in Beaker in the Specimen Lab Comments. 4. Transfer 1 mL (minimum of 0.7 mL) to a Clear BD No Additive container . 5. Record the Total Volume on the specimen container . Note: Do not send the 24-hour collection jug to ICL or the reference lab.
