Limitations
This test is not approved for use in children less than two years old. For HIV screening in children less than two years, PCR testing is often used.


Clinical Significance
This assay uses antibodies against both anti-HIV antibodies and a conserved epitope on the p24 antigen. A patient that has anti-HIV antibodies and/or HIV antigen in plasma can test positive. This test thereby can detect both acute and chronic HIV infection.
