Clinical Significance
Bloody stools, due to intrinsic hemorrhage, are usually passed one day after birth, whereas those due to ingestion of maternal blood are usually passed within 12 hours after birth. This test is used to distinguish whether or not bloody infant vomit or stool is the result of ingestion of maternal blood during the birthing process or an internal hemorrhage.
