Instructions
Patient should be fasting for a minimum of 12 hours. No smoking and only mild exercise. A finger stick glucose and venous fasting specimen is collected. The fasting glucose must be less the 125 mg/dL. If it is higher consult with patient's physician and verify that testing should be continued, document physician response. If criteria is met or physician approves, have patient ingest 100 gm (or 75 gm as directed by physician) loaded dose of glucola. Patient has 5 min to consume glucola. Draw subsequent specimens 30 min, 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours, 4 hours, and 5 hours from the time the glucola was ingested. Label each with the specific draw time. No eating, drinking or smoking during testing interval. Patients weighing less than 100 pounds must have glucose dose adjusted. Contact the laboratory for specific instruction.
