Pathologist Peripheral Blood Smear Reviews are automatically ordered as per the following criteria.
*these guidelines are per 30 days, unless otherwise noted.
  • Any promyelocytes or immature cells containing Auer Rods
  • WBC count ≥30.0
  • Platelet count ≥ 1,000
  • MCV > 120 fL
  • Absolute neuotrphil ≤ 0.5
  • Absolute basophilia > 0.3
  • Absolute monocytosis > 5.0
  • Absolute lymphocytosis ≥ 5.0 (on patients > 13 years old)
  • Any blasts present
  • Any abnormal lymphocytes or lymphoma cells (first time or unknown patient)
  • Any plasma cells
  • Any bacteria, yeast, non RBC inclusions, or infectious organisms
  • Any cryoglubulins
  • Any hemolytic anemia
    • Sickle cells (first time or unknown patient)
    • Marked RBC abnormalities such as schistocytes
  • Any dysplastic (hypolobated) neutrophils (≤ 2 lobes)
  • Any congenital anomaly (Chediak-Higashi, May-Hegglin, Alder-Riley, Pegler Huet)
  • NRBCs > 5 (on patients ≥ 18 years old)
  • Anything abnormal or suspicious
  • Any increase in abnormal cells from previous differential
