Preferred Specimen
For fluids such as: Abdominal, amniotic, ascites, bile, joint, paracentesis, pericardial,peritoneal, pleural, synovial, thoracentesis.


Minimum Volume
1 mL


Other Acceptable Specimens
1 set of Virtuo Bottles containing body fluid

Sterile Container or Syringe with fluid


Instructions
Disinfect overlaying skin, obtain specimen via percutaneious needle aspiration or surgery.


Transport Container
Sterile screw-cap tube, Sterile syringe (with needle removed and capped), or blood culture bottle for bacteria.


Transport Temperature
Room temperature


Specimen Stability
24 hours at room temp.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Never submit specimen containers with needles attached.


Methodology
Culture or on Bactec machine if submitted in Bactec bottles
