Plasma Mixing studies are performed to help identify a factor deficiency in the presence of a prolonged PT and/or APTT. Normal plasma is added to the patient's plasma in an even ratio and the mixture assayed for APTT and PT as per protocol. This is a screening test for factor deficiencies and should be followed up with appropriate factor assays in the presence or absence of a correction in the PT or APTT assay.


Preferred Specimen
Collect two mL Platelet poor citrated plasma (3.2 % Na Citrate tube (Blue Top)). 1.0 mL/tube.

0.5 mL/tube

Frozen for Out-Patient


Specimen Stability
Room Temperature: IMMEDIATE
Refrigerated: Unacceptable
Frozen: 7days at -20 C, 90days at -70 C


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Clotted specimen. Collected in wrong anticoagulant. Wrong blood/anticoagulant ration (under or over filled). Severly hemolyzed.
