Methodology
Freezing-point depression method is used to measure Osmolality. Osmolality is the total solute concentration of an aqueous solution.
Reference Range
Serum: 285 – 310 mOsm/kg
Clinical Significance
Serum osmolality is increased in hypernatremia, hyperglycemia, uremia, ethanol, methanol, or ethylene glycol overdoses, and in diabetes insipidus.
