Test Code996
CPT Codes
84153-Total; 84154-Free
Preferred Specimen
Submit 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Container/Tube: Green top (lithium-heparin) tube(s)
Specimen Volume: 3 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of plasma
Serum
Container/Tube: Serum gel tube(s)
Specimen Volume: 3 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of serum

Transport Temperature
Refrigerate 8 hours/Frozen OK
Methodology
Electrochemiluminescent Immunoassay (ECLIA)
Setup Schedule
Monday through Friday
Reference Range
Total PSA
0.00-4.00 ng/mL
Free PSA Ratio
About 25% of asymptomatic men older than 50 years and PSA values of 4.0 to10 ng/ml have prostate cancer, compared with about 12% for those with PSA values of 2.0 to 3.9 ng/ml. Free PSA can help classify these men into subgroups. The probability of finding PCA with TPSA between 4.0 and 10.0 ng/ml increases with increasing age and with decreasing FPSA/TPSA ratios.
