Preferred Specimen

Container/Tube: Light blue-top (citrate) tube-Grossly hemolyzed, clotted blood, or an insufficient specimen is not acceptable.
Specimen Volume: Full tube
Collection Instructions: Blood to anticoagulant ratio is critical.
Note: 1. Results may be affected by hematocrit >55%.   2. Tube should remain stoppered.   3. Specimen cannot be drawn from heparinized line.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Grossly hemolyzed, clotted blood, a specimen over 24 hours old, or an insufficient specimen is not acceptable.

Critical values (automatic call-back): >20 seconds if not on anticoagulant therapy

INR: >5.0 if on anticoagulant therapy


Clinical Significance
 Useful for evaluation of extrinsic coagulation systems: factor II, V, VII, and X, and for monitoring anticoagulant therapy.
