Instructions

Container/Tube: Light blue-top (citrate) tube-Grossly hemolyzed, clotted blood, or an insufficient specimen is not acceptable.
Specimen Volume: Full tube
Collection Instructions: Blood to anticoagulant ratio is critical.
Note: 1. Results may be affected by hematocrit >55%.   2. Tube should remain stoppered.   3. Specimen cannot be drawn from heparinized line.

Room temperature: 4 hours
Refrigerated: 4 hours


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Grossly hemolyzed, clotted blood, a specimen over 4 hours old, or an insufficient specimen is not acceptable.

22-33 seconds
Critical values (automatic call-back): >130 seconds if on anticoagulant therapy;  >40 seconds if not on anticoagulant therapy


Clinical Significance
Useful for evaluation of intrinsic coagulation systems: factors II, V, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, and for monitoring heparin therapy.
