Instructions
1. Puncture vesicle with sterile needle and firmly scrape lesion area with tongue depressor or moistened cotton swab.
2. Spread cellular material evenly on frosted glass slide and fix immediately in 95% ethyl alcohol.
3. For lesion of skin or vulva, which are dry surfaces, it is helpful to moisten lesion with saline before scraping it.
Note: 1. The following specimens will be returned to the submitting physician:
A. No requisition form
B. Name on requisition does not match name on specimen
C. Broken slide that cannot be reconstructed
D. Unlabeled specimen
E. No doctor’s name given
F. Improper fixation
G. Air-drying artifact
2. Label holder with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.
