Preferred Specimen


Container/Tube: Light blue-top (citrate) tube-Grossly hemolyzed, clotted blood, or an insufficient specimen is not acceptable.
Specimen Volume: Full tube
Collection Instructions: Blood to anticoagulant ratio is critical.
Note:
1. Results may be affected by hematocrit >50%.
2. Tube should remain stoppered.

Transport Temperature
Room temp <=2 hours 


Specimen Stability
Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of draw.  


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Grossly hemolyzed, clotted blood, or an insufficient specimen is not acceptable.

<0.50 mg/L FEU
Negative predictive value cutoff: 0.50 mg/L FEU


Clinical Significance
Useful for the diagnosis of the syndrome of intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis (DIC). The clinical application of D-dimer measurement is also an aid in the negative predictability of thromboembolic events.
