Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) Intact
Test Code307
CPT Codes
83970
Preferred Specimen
Container/Tube: Yellow-Top Serum gel tube (SST), Green-Top Lithium Heparin gel tube (PST), EDTA Plasma
Specimen Volume: 2 mL of serum or plasma
Collection Instructions: Centrifuge and send serum or plasma in a plastic vial. See below for requirements.
Due to the nocturnal rise in intact-PTH level, specimen should be collected in the morning, after 7 am; preferable following an overnight fast.
Specimen Stability
Correct handling of patient samples is critical to ensure the integrity of the intact PTH molecule. Intact PTH has been demonstrated to be labile and is susceptible to fragmentation. This instability depends on both time and temperature. Patient sample stability is outlined in the following table:
Temperature EDTA Plasma Stability Serum Stability (yellow-top) Plasma (lithium\-heparin) green-top
Room Temperature 25 hours Not tested Up to 9 hours
Refrigerated 14 days Not tested (keep refrigerated until frozen) Up to 72 hours
Frozen Not tested Within 8 hours Not tested
