Container/Tube: Grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tubes
Specimen Volume: Full tube for each specimen
Collection Instructions: Both lactate and ammonia can be performed on this tube.
1. Insert heparin lock 15 minutes before drawing baseline specimen.
2. Draw baseline specimen 15 minutes after heparin lock is inserted, and place tube of blood on ice.
3. Place blood pressure cuff above elbow on arm to be tested and inflate to 20 mm Hg above systolic blood pressure.
4. Remain with patient and Physical Therapist during exercise portion of test.
5. Nursing will draw blood specimens in potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride tubes at 1-, 3-, 5-, 10-, and 15-minutes after cessation of exercise for lactate and ammonia.
6. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.
