Specimen Volume: 3 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of plasma
Collection Instructions: Draw blood from a patient who has been awake for at least 2 hours.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma. 2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

Serum
Container/Tube: Serum gel tube(s)
Specimen Volume: 3 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of serum
Collection Instructions: Draw blood from a patient who has been awake for at least 2 hours.
Note: 1. Indicate serum. 2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).


Instructions
Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.


Transport Temperature
Refrigerate <=24 hours/Frozen OK

Males:
2.5-17.0 ng/mL

Females (based on menstrual cycle)
Entire cycle: 4.6-37 ng/mL
Follicular phase: 4.5-33 ng/mL
Midcycle: 6.3-46 ng/mL
Luteal phase: 4.9-40 ng/mL

Females, pregnant
First trimester: 3.2-43 ng/mL
Second trimester: 13-166 ng/mL
Third trimester: 13-318 ng/mL


Clinical Significance
 Useful for detection of prolactin-secreting tumors; work-up in females for infertility, secondary amenorrhea, uncommonly primary amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea; and work-up in males for impotence, gynecomastia, and hypogonadism.
