Clinical Significance
Rubella (German measles) is usually a mild disease. However, rubella virus contracted during pregnancy may produce fetal abnormalities, spontaneous abortion, miscarriage, or stillbirth. Serological testing for rubell a virus antibody permits detection of nonimmune individuals. Immunization is appropriate for nonimmune women of childbearing age. This assay detects both IgG and IgM anti-rubella antibodies.
