Clinical Significance
Examination of CSF Total Protein is used chiefly to detect increased permeability of the blood/brain barrier to plasma proteins or to detect increased intrathecal secretion of immunoglobulins. The permeability of the blood/brain barrier to plasma proteins is increased in high intracranial pressure due to brain tumor or intracerebral hemorrhage, or by inflammation, especially bacterial meningitis
