Ova and Parasites, Stool

Message
The patient passes random feces into a clean, dry container. Use the spoon from the underside of a parasite fixative container cap to transfer feces from the clean, dry container to the fixative container. Instructions for stool collection are available through Lab Client Services or Lab Website.

Preferred Specimen
Stool- 1.5 cm. diameter (walnut-sized) formed or soft sample; 2 ml. of loose or liquid sample


Instructions
Recommended for Out of country travel, Immunocompromised patients and symptomatic patients with negative parasite screen.


Transport Container
Parasite preservative container such as Protofix ™CLR recommended for Outpatient specimens. If parasite fixative is not available, transport the feces in a dry, clean container.


Transport Temperature
Formed: Room temp.- 4 hours; Refrigerated- 24 hours, Soft/loose/liquid: Room temp.- 2 hours (1 hour for liquid), Refrigerated: 4 hours. Parasite preservative: Indefinately at room temp. when suspended at a ratio of 1 part feces to 3 parts preservative.

Clinical Significance
Correct diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infection depends on proper collection, transport, detection and identification of parasites in stool specimens.
