Clinical Significance
The presence of significant amounts of glucose in the urine is defined as glucosuria. Glucosuria occurs when the blood glucose level exceeds its normal threshold for glucose (180-200 mg/dl). The quantity of urine glucose is dependant upon the blood glucose level, the rate of glomerular filtration, and the degree of tubular re-absorption. The main cause for glucosuria is hyperglycemia, although not always concomitant.
