Parasite Screen (Giardia/Cryptosporidium by DFA), Stool

Message
The patient passes random feces into a clean, dry container. Use the provided wooden applicator spoon to transfer feces from the clean, dry container to the fixative container. Instructions for stool collection are available through Lab Client Services or Lab Website.

Preferred Specimen
Parasite preservative container such as Protofix ™CLR recommended for Outpatient specimens. If parasite fixative is not available, transport the feces in a dry, clean container.


Instructions
Parasites endemic to our region - Giardia & Cryptosporidium. 1.5 cm. diameter (walnut-sized) formed or soft sample; 2 ml. of loose or liquid sample. Use of parasite preservative (Protofix ™CLR) container recommended.

Formed: Room temp.- 4 hours; Refrigerated- 24 hours, Soft/loose/liquid: Room temp.- 2 hours (1 hour for liquid), Refrigerated: 4 hours. Parasite preservative: Indefinately at room temp.

Correct diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infection depends on proper collection, transport, detection and identification of parasites in stool specimens.
