Urine protein is detected with the use of a dipstick to semi-quantitatively determine the prescence of urine protein.

Preferred Specimen
First morning, clean-catch, mid-stream voided urine sample is preferred; a random sample is acceptable. Collect the urine sample into a clean screw-cap container. Urine samples from pediatric patients may be collected in a pedi urine bag system. Minimum sample- 1 ml

Transport Temperature
Perform testing within 2 hours if stored at 15-25º C (room temperature). If testing is delayed, specimen may stored at 2-8º C for up to 12 hours. Specimens stored in a BD Vacutainer Plus Urine Preservative can be tested up to 72 hours after collection.


Clinical Significance
The presence of an abnormal amount of urine protein (proteinuria) may be an important indicator of renal disease.
