Clinical Significance
Quinidine is used in the treatment of acute and chronic supraventricular arrhythmias and ectopic rhythm disturbances. Quinidine clearance can be altered by changes in plasma proteins and in renal and/or hepatic dysfunction. Both quinidine and the related isomer quinine possess antimalarial schizonticide activity. Quinidine levels are monitored to assure adequate therapeutic levels are achieved and to avoid toxicity.
