Preferred Specimen
Whole blood collected in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube - (see instructions)
Minimum Volume
See Instructions
Instructions
Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Please note: Effective 11/01/96, specimens submitted in ACD tubes (yellow-top) will no longer be accepted because of the high incidence of platelet clumping associated with this anticoagulant. If the platelet count is less than 20,000/ccm, submit 7-10 mL of whole blood.
Platelet Count Minimum Volume:
≥ 45,000 2 mL
20,000-45,000 5 mL
<20,000 10 mL
Pediatric minimum volume: The minimum volume is platelet count dependent. If possible, submit at least 1 mL EDTA blood

FDA Status
This test was developed and its analytical performance characteristics have been determined by Quest Diagnostics. It has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This assay has been validated pursuant to the CLIA regulations and is used for clinical purposes.
Setup Schedule
Set up: Daily; Report available: 4-5 days
Reference Range
Anti-IgG | Negative |
Clinical Significance
Thrombocytopenia that is refractory to platelet transfusions may be due to direct platelet antibody. Testing is useful to differentiate immune from non-immune disorders.
