Preferred Specimen
Culture swab.
Instructions
Immobilize the patient's head and insert the swab into the nostril to the posterior nares. Leave it in place for a few seconds and remove.

Processing of specimen will be delayed if test is not indicated on requisition. Frozen specimen.

Conventional Isolation and Identification Techniques. Susceptibilities will be performed on appropriate isolates.

Clinical Significance
Culture of the nose (as opposed to nasopharynx) is primarily for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus. The significance of other organisms is difficult to assess since this site and its discharges can easily be colonized by a variety of organisms.
