Preferred Specimen
Body Fluids such as Biliary/Hepatic, JP Drainage (surgical drainage), Pancreatic, Pericardial, Peritoneal/Ascites, Pleural or Synovial fluid are aceptable specimens for Body Fluid Total Bilirubin.
Specimen Stability
It has been reported that exposure to direct sunlight can decrease bilirubin in samples by 50% wIthin one hour. When well protected from light, bilirubin in serum is stable for 3 days when stored at 2 - 80 C, or 3 months when stored at < -200 C.
Setup Schedule
24x7
Reference Range
Reported in mg/dL
Reference Range: Reference range has not been established for bilirubin in body fluids. The test result should be integrated into the clinical context for interpretation.
NOTE: Serum bilirubin and body fluid bilirubin ratios may aid in the distinction between a transudative and an exudative body fluid.
Caution: Bilirubin is photosensitive. Failure to protect from light may cause decreased results. Contamination by blood may cause altered results in either direction.
