Malassezia Furfur, order as FUNGUS CULTURE, CXFUN

Message

M.furfur is a lipophilic normal skin flora yeast that can cause systemic infection in neonates and infants receiving parenteral fat emulsion therapy.  To get growth on culture, special handling is required which would not be part of a routine fungal culture.  Special instructions:

Specimen:

  • Blood collected through deep-line catheter - venous, peripheral blood culture is not as good in this instance.

  • Line collection on infants is best specimen.

  • A piece of catheter collected at time of removal (like a catheter tip)

  • Rarely requested - skin scrapings.  Send to lab in sterile, dry container
