Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate
MessageINCLUDED IN MET10, Cm10, CMP, RENAL PANELS
Test CodeEGFR, EGFR1, EGFR2
Alias/See AlsoGFR, EGFR, Glomerular Filtraion Rate, EGFR1, EGFR2
Reference Range
CMC Laboratories are pleased to announce the transition to the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology recommendation from 2021 to use race-free calculations/equations to estimate GFR.
|
Available Facilities: CRMC, CCMC, FHSH, and CCI
Test Order Information: The calculation is included in standard chemistry panels that include creatinine. Examples include:
- CMP: Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
- MET10: Basic Metabolic Panel
- CM10: Basic Metabolic Panel with Ionized Ca
- Renal Function Panel
- Creatinine
Effective Date: April 23, 2026. Change will go into effect approximately Noon. All labs resulted after this time will have the new eGFR calculated result.
Calculation Information/Highlights:
Current eGFR Calculation/Equation: MDR
(MDR = Modification of diet in renal disease)
Estimates GFR Using serum creatinine, age, sex, and RACE
Reference range and Comment:
GFR is estimated using the MDRD equation recommended by the National Kidney Disease Education Program.
Comment:
Estimated GFR Interpretive Information: (EGFR/mL/min/1.73m2)
>90: Normal - if no other evidence of kidney disease present.
Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 1 - if there is evidence
of kidney disease present such as proteinuria, hematuria,
genetic kidney disease, or structural abnormality.
60-89: Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 2 (Mild)
30-59: Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3 (Moderate)
15-29: Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 4 (Severe)
<15: Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5 (End Stage, Kidney Failure)
* GFR must be <60 mL/min/1.73m2 for at least 3 months to meet the definition of Chronic Kidney Disease. |
New eGFR Calculation/Equation: CKD-EPI
(CKD-EPI = Chronic kidney disease-epidemiology)
Estimates GFR from serum creatinine, age, and sex
Reference range and Comment:
GFR is estimated using the calculation based on the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation refit without adjustment for race.
