Clinical Significance
The presence of free hemoglobin in plasma is an indication of intravascular hemolysis resulting from numerous conditions such as:  paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), sickle-cell disease (SCD), thalassemia, hereditary spherocytosis, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, pyruvate kinase deficiency, ABO mismatch (transfusion reactions), and in cardiopulmonary bypass or mechanical heart valve (like the impella device)-induced anemia.
