NOTE: AFB Smear Only, is an acceptable test order only if 5 cultures have already been performed and the physician ordered "AFB Smear" and did not order AFB Culture. If 5 cultures have not been performed during this current hospital stay, then the order for AFB Smear will be changed to a full AFB Culture. 

  • The 5 previous cultures need to be in the current hospital stay.  Each new hospital stay would start over with a new set of 5 before we could accept a physician's order that is just for AFB Smear.
