Clinical Significance
The ACT is a screening test that has been found to be sensitive to deficiencies of coagulation factors. It is useful as a routine pre-surgical screen test and for monitoring heparin therapy. The ACT is commonly used for heparin anticoagulation monitoring during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), interventional radiology, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), hemofiltration, hemodialysis and critical care.
