Preferred Specimen
Fluid in sterile container: 1.5 to 10 mL for aerobic and anaerobic culture plus gram stain
NOTE: Drainage from abscesses should be ordered as Wound cultures

- Synovial (knee, elbow, joint) fluids: Deliver to lab in sterile tube. EDTA is not recommended for culture specimens. Small amount of heparin is OK.
- Amniotic: Place into sterile tube. Deliver immediately to lab.
- Chest/Abdominal Fluids (Peritoneal, Ascites): Decontaminate skin. Place specimen into sterile fluid container. Transport immediately to lab. Transport at room temperature 25 degrees celsius. Do not send swabs dipped in fluid, this contains too few bacteria to be detectable for culture. Send us the actual fluid specimen.
- Bone Marrow: Collect and place in sterile tube (black screw top) or Red vacutainer or dark green lithium heparin vacutainer.
- Quantitative Duodenal Aspirates (Only performed for specific cases-call laboratory for approval before ordering as a source)
