Clinical Significance

 Pneumocystis carinii (now called P.jiroveci) is an opportunistic parasite which causes life threatening pneumonia in severely immunocompromised individuals such as AIDS patients or premature infants. The MERIFLUOR-Pneumocystis test kit is an in vitro, direct, immunofluorescent procedure for the detection of Pneumocystis carinii cysts and trophozoites in direct smears of respiratory tract fluids or tissues.
