Instructions
Genital Culture Collection:



  • Clean surrounding mucosa or skin. Collect abscess fluid with syringe and needle to avoid contamination with genital flora.


  • Send 1 anaerobic (blue) swab to lab (ASAP) for plating.   Specimen – cervix or urethra, rectal swab, throat swab. White-aerobic swab is acceptable if specimen is delivered immediately to lab.



  • GC Culture – for Neisseria gonorrhoeae – culture is used for legal cases.




    • Best to obtain special plate from lab and inoculate plate at bedside.



    • May also collect and send the swab in the transport media (Swab with Charcoal Transport).   



    • If specimen will be delivered to the Microbiology lab within 6 hours, it is OK to use the routine Aerobic culture swab.

      For routine testing for GC and Chlamydia, consider using amplified DNA probe method (Aptima swab).
