Preferred Specimen
  • IsoStat Isolator Tube, Wampole
    • Adult-10 mL
    • Neonate/Infant:  1.5 ml



 


Minimum Volume
Adult:  10 mL
Neonate/Infant:  1.5 mL


Instructions
  • Obtain special Fungus Isolator tube from laboratory.
  • Collect 10 ml of blood in the isolator tube aseptically to avoid microbial contamination. Clean the collection site with a disinfectant at the time of collection. Use same method of site preparation as for regular Blood cultures.

Room Temperature.  Do Not refrigerate.

Clinical Significance
Refer to Blood Culture (CXBLD).
Presence of bacteria or fungus in a blood culture is a clinically serious situation. The quality of the culture test is highly dependent on strict adherence to protocols for specimen collection and processing.
