Preferred Specimen
- BD SPS Vacutainer: This is a yellow stoppered Vacutainer type tube labeled “SPS.”
Minimum Volume
Adult: 10 mL
Neonate/Infant: 1.5 mL
Neonate/Infant: 1.5 mL
Instructions
Blood – Obtain special BD SPS Vacutainer tube from lab before drawing blood.
- Collect blood aseptically to avoid microbial contamination. Clean the collection site with a disinfectant at the time of collection. Use same method of site preparation as for regular Blood Culture Collection.
- BD SPS Vacutainer: Inject 10ml of blood into the SPS (Sodium polyanethole sulfonate) tube at the patient’s bedside and then transported to the lab. This is a yellow stoppered Vacutainer type tube labeled “SPS.”
- Adult-10 mL
- Neonate/Infant: 1.5 ml

Clinical Significance
Refer to Blood Culture (CXBLD).
Presence of bacteria or fungus in a blood culture is a clinically serious situation. The quality of the culture test is highly dependent on strict adherence to protocols for specimen collection and processing.
