Clean-Catch Urines
Clean-Catch Urines
- Properly identify the patient following Patient Identification procedures.
- When a random urine specimen is needed for urinalysis, a non-sterile urine container may be used. If a urine culture is ordered, a sterile container must be used for the specimen. NOTE: If a urine GC/Chlamydia test is ordered, a first-catch urine is collected. See Specimen Collection - Chlamydia/GC Urine #20774.
- Provide Instructions to the patient on how to collect a midstream urine specimen.
- Clean and rinse genital area before collecting specimen (disposable towelettes or equivalent).
- Instruct the patient to urinate for a few seconds into the toilet.
- After this small volume has passed, the container is used to catch the next portion “midstream” urine in the STERILE container. Minimum desired volume is 15 ml.
- When the container is half full, the patient should finish urinating into the toilet.
- Place the lid on the specimen container and submit to the laboratory.
- NOTE: Bedpan or Urinal specimens are NOT acceptable.
- Clean and rinse genital area before collecting specimen (disposable towelettes or equivalent).
- Insert catheter and discard the initial 15-30 mls of urine from the mouth of the catheter.
- Collect sample of urine into a STERILE container.
- Clean the catheter collection port with a 70% alcohol wipe.
- Using sterile technique, puncture the collection port with a needle attached to a syringe. Note: Do not collect urine from the catheter collection bag.
