Patient Preparation
Serum levels drawn less than 6 hours after a toxic dose can be used to confirm overdose.
Repeat testing within 2 - 3 hours is recommended to ensure that absorption is complete and to determine the effectiveness of the therapeutic intervention.
After therapeutic doses of salicylates, peak levels are reached at 2 hours.

Specimen Stability
Specimens should be separated and tested immediately after collection. Samples are generally considered stable for 7 days when stored at 2 - 80 C. Samples are stable for 6 months when stored at < -200 C.

Clinical Significance
Salicylate testing may be ordered when it is suspected that someone has ingested a large amount of aspirin or other drugs containing salicylate.
Testing may be ordered when a person is experiencing symptoms associated with an acute or chronic salicylate overdose. Symptoms may include: Nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, ringing in ears (tinnitus), sweating, dizziness, and confusion.
Testing may be done when patients are suspected of overdosing.
Testing may be performed frequently (every 2-3 hours) to monitor overdose or toxicity.
