Preferred Specimen
Acceptable Specimens:
  • A swab with Vaginal discharge
  • A swab from Urethral discharge
  • A swab with Penile discharge
  • Urethral-mucosa scrapings
 


Instructions
Swabs are placed into a sterile tube containing 0.5-1.0 ml saline.   DO NOT DECANT SALINE FROM TUBE. Replace cap. The specimen must be kept at room temperature and transported to the laboratory within 1 hour, unless other arrangements have been made at your processing site. Do not refrigerate.

Clinical Significance
Wet mounts prepared from genital (usually vaginal) swabs are used in the detection of Trichomonas, Yeast, and Clue cells (non-specific bacterial vaginitis). The Trichomonas parasites need to be kept motile to identify them, so chemicals which would kill the parasites should not be applied to this preparation.
