Preferred Specimen
STERILE CONTAINER
Semen collected into sterile wide-mouth container such a urine cup or special condoms for semen collection.


Patient Preparation
Semen collection instructions:
  1. Refrain from sexual intercourse and masterbation for 2-5 days.
  2. Produce the sample by masturbation without artificial lubrication.
  3. The whole ejaculate must be collected into a sterile wide mouth cup (such as a Urine container) or in a special condom specific for specimen analysis (regular condoms are unacceptable).
  4. Label the container with name, date, and collection time.
  5. Deliver to the testing laboratory within 1 hour of collection.  Keep specimen warm in a pocket near to your body until delivered to the laboratory.


Specimen Stability
Specimens for evaluation of infertility must be kept warm (between 20° and 40°C) and transported to the laboratory within one hour of collection.

Clinical Significance
Semen analysis is usually performed in evaluation of infertility and vasectomy procedures. For infertility studies, a complete analysis is performed: volume, pH, liquefaction, viscosity, motility, morphology, and count.
