  2. Blood parasite seen, not Plasmodium malaria.
  3. Malaria parasites seen, not Plasmodium falciparum.
  4. Malaria parasites seen, species not determined.
  5. Plasmodium vivax
  6. Plasmodium species
  7. Plasmodium ovale h. Plasmodium malariae
  8. Plasmodium falciparum
 All positive results are considered CRITICAL and must be called to the RN and/or provider per policy and documented via the COMM Log.
All Positive slides will include a % malaria parasite quantitation and a species identification and pathology review.
All Positives will have slides sent to Public Health.
 

ABNORMAL/CRITICAL RESULTS:

  1. Notify the physician (or RN in charge of patient).
  2. Hematology: 
    1. Make additional slides to send to Public Health
    2. Complete the  Public Health Laboratory Form and provide the Form and Slides to the send out department.
      1. Fill out the patient information
      2. Submitting Facility:  CRMC
      3. Bill to:  leave blank
      4. Send/Fax results:  Enter 559-459-2319
      5. Check the box for P9 Parasitology Reference Specimen
      6. Origin of Specimen:  Select "other" and write in Malaria ID. 
  3. Send Out Department: 
    1. Order a MISC Test:  Malaria Slides to Public Health.
    2. Send to Public Health:
      1. The completed Public Health Laboratory Form,
      2. the slides,
      3. and a Patient history printout from EPIC that includes Presenting symptoms and travel history.


Clinical Significance
Aid in and confirm a malaria diagnosis.
